Frequently Asked Questions
Q. What is Royal Arch?
The Supreme Order of the Holy Royal Arch of Jerusalem, more commonly known as Chapter is considered the completion of the Third Degree or Raising in the Craft.
Q. What is it about?
In Chapter the ceremony of initiation is called Exaltation and is based upon the rebuilding of King Solomon’s Temple after its destruction by the Babyonians under King Nebuchadnezzar in about 586 BC.
Q. What does it teach?
It provides a spiritual dimension at which the Craft ceremonies can only hint, leading on naturally to consider what happens after the event so vividly re-enacted in the Ceremony of Raising.
Q. Is it a Christian Order?
No, it is open to all faiths.
Q. Can I join Chapter before going through the Chair in Craft?
Yes. You can join Chapter after you have been a Master Mason for four weeks and upwards. You can also go through the Chairs of Chapter before you have been through the Chair of a Craft Lodge.
Q. How many times a year does the Chapter meet?
Chapter meetings are called Convocations and Progress Chapter meets at Chertsey Masonic Hall, three times a year on the 4th Friday in October and 3rd Friday in February and May (Installation Convocation). Convocations start at 17:00 followed by dinner at around 19:00.
Q. Is there other involvement as in the Craft i.e. LOIs?
In Chapter an LOI is called a Chapter of Improvement and Progress Chapter typically has 2 or 3 in the weeks before a meeting and are currently held at a Companions home. There are fewer Assistant Officers in RA and there is less ‘floor work’ than the Craft.
Q. I am progressing through the offices of Craft or another Order is there a lot of ritual to learn?
No. Within the last few years Supreme Grand Chapter has authorised a revised ritual, which lends itself to the work being shared by a number of Companions. Progress Chapter has adopted the revised workings and share the ritual amongst a number of Companions resulting in less pressure on any individual.
Q. Do I need more regalia?

progressed to the Principals chairs which can be purchased for a very modest cost or in exchange for a donation to
charity. Ask you proposer for advice.
Q. How much will it cost me?
2026-27 Annual subscriptions for Progress Chapter are currently £160.00 per year inclusive of dining.
There is a one-off joining fee of £30.00.
Q. Is it correct that you have to be in Royal Arch before you can join other orders?
Yes. There are a number of orders such as Knights Templar, Red Cross of Constantine and Royal & Select Masters where it is a prerequisite that you are a member of the Royal Arch but you should ask your Proposer or Scribe E. to be sure.
